Steampunk has been slowly growing on me for a while. If you don't know what steam punk is... think Victorian age meets technology. A good example of a steampunk movie is Wild, Wild West with Will Smith.
Anyway... I think I'm really liking it. I haven't read any steampunk novels. I'll have to give them a try. I dug through some old costume jewelry. And, with the help of my mom, I'm going to try my hand at making steampunk jewelry.
Anyone else into it?

I haven't read very much steampunk, either, this is something I've been looking into recently though. There's a book that just came out in the UK though, The Affinity Bridge by George Mann, which is coming out in the states July 7th, 2009 and it's steampunk. I just recently downloaded from Tor a short story by George Mann (also steampunk) called The Shattered Teacup that I believe takes place in the same world. I need to get around to reading that soon-I have high hopes for it-I'll let you know how that goes :)

The Golden Compass actually is rather steampunk. It has some alternate technologies like a special oil that is used instead of electricity and they have airships. The books have a much more steampunk feel than the movie does. I'm really thinking about rereading them. They're a lot of fun.

Check out http://datamancer.net/ for some awesome functional steampunk gear, including fully functional computers. I also recommend Jacob von Slatt's work for pure awesome.

Thanks for the links. I saw a PBS short special on Jacob von Slatt's steampunk on a show called Make It. That was weird... seeing steampunk on PBS. It was really interesting to watch him make a headlemp for his steampunk car. He made the lamp out of brass goblets. :)

I got my issue of Bust magazine in the mail yesterday and it has a Steampunk fashion shoot in it. Of course, this section is called "Apocalypse Now" and for the most part, is more Cyberpunk than Steampunk, but it's still pretty cool.

Yeah, I'm not versed enough in steampunk/cyberpunk to be able to tell the difference. I bet I have used the wrong term to describe something before. ;)

Well, let's see. Anyone can correct me if I'm explaining this wrong here, too.

Steampunk is very Victorian. I sort of think of it as modern day technology items, run on steampower, in the victorian era...and punk. Most steampunk stories are set in the Victorian Era in england. Steampunk is also more fantasy.

Cyberpunk is futuristic. Advanced science, but is usually very apocalyptic...and punk. Cyberpunk is science fiction.

In terms of fashion, steampunk's biggest known characteristic is probably brass goggles, which the photoshoot I was talking about had, but nothing else victorian.

While people mix the two up a lot, I think it will help to look at a Steampunk Google Image Search and then a Cyberpunk Google Image Search side by side.

I see what you mean. There is a clear difference. I don't think I ever called anything steampunk that wasn't. So... Wild, Wild West is steampunk and The Matrix is cyberpunk. BIG difference. :)
