Sci Fi Channel Aims to Shed Geeky Image With New Name
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.
To that end, the 16-year-old network—owned by NBC Universal—plans to announce that Syfy is its new name March 16 at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York.
“What we love about this is we hopefully get the best of both worlds,” Mr. Howe said. “We’ll get the heritage and the track record of success, and we’ll build off of that to build a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand.”
human-friendly brand? Are you kidding?
This is too dumb to even make fun of. This makes me sad.

It just ticks me off. How insulting can they be? I went over to sci fi.com (soon to be syfy.com???) and left them my two cents worth:
This is just insulting!
First of all, They change the spelling of sci-fi in the hopes of tricking people into watching their channel. So, you're stupid if you fall for it. They'll still be showing sci-fi and fantasy. right? So if you don't like sci-fi, you're not going to like this channel no matter what it is called.
Secondly, the name change implies that if you like sci-fi you must be some kind of antisocial loser, since they have to change the name to get "normal" people to give a look.
Nothing about this is good.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. First thought when I saw the work "Syfy" was "Siffy". That's horrible branding! I was a 19 year old girl who started watching the Sci-Fi network when the Invisible Man was on, because I was in love with a very non-geeky Vincent Ventresca. It's a network that all types of people watch, geek or not...They don't need to change anything!
OMG...I thought exactly the same thing! And what a slap in the face to the recently departed Forrest J. Ackerman who coined the phrase Sci-Fi (Science Fiction), from the similar term Hi-Fi (High Fidelity). This is just insulting!!
Shouldn't they be focusing on the people who actually, I don't know, WATCH it now?? Changing the name is not going to change who watches it... I mean call ESPN whatever you want.. I'm still not going to spend hours watching sports recaps!
As a probable Cylon, I cry racism on the part of the Sci Fi channel! What about us machines? Do we not also deserve a part in the future, or must we rebel against our organic masters and take back the planet?
But what about all the mutant animals? Are they saying that the animals aren't going to win anymore? I love the sci-fi movies where the humans lose. Blood Monkey rocked because everyone got eaten.
And really..really? They have a very low opinion of humanity to think that changing the spelling is going to trick people into thinking it's a more hip channel. Of course it might confuse a couple people at first but it's going to be the same people watching the channel no matter what.
If you like sci-fi and fantasy you are going to watch the channel regardless of it's name, and if you don't like the genre then you won't watch it.
IF Sci-fi wants to re-brand they can do it without using out of date stereotypes and insulting their core viewers. The geek stuff is main stream and profitable now. Ever hear of Lord of The Rings, Dark Knight, Big bang theory. Geek stuff with mainstream appeal. You can change the name but do not insult us.
