New toys!

So, my work at the call center yielded a $50 gift certificate of my choice. I chose to get one for Amazon.com as I always do. Last night Faith and I sat down to spend it. Here's a list of the things we decided to get:

1) Watchmen
2) Sandman Vol. 1
3) V for Vendetta (graphic novel)
4) 2 VC Andrews books that were missing from Faith's collection
5) books 4, 5, and 6 of Kushiel's Legacy
6) Dr Horrible

With a sale that was going on to get one book free that all cost us about $30 or so after the gi… Continue

Writing in the new year.

So, I've sadly been avoiding any sort of writing yet again. I managed to write over 5000 words to start a fantasy novel in less than 2 weeks, but I haven't touched it since. I want to make a resolution for this year that I will be able to keep that will get me writing again. Strangely enough I'm sort of inspired by the movie Yes Man. In there they basically talk about how deciding to do something and then not following through is breaking a promise to yourself. I'd thought of it that way before,… Continue

Best Ringtone Ever

So, the other day I got around to adding some ringtones to my phone. I had some on there before it got stolen early this year, but I never got things put back on it. During my ponderings on what I should put on my phone I finally thought of the Buffy Theme. So that's my new default ringtone. w00t! I also uploaded it to my profile here for any of you that are missing Buffy.

Birthday fun!

Yesterday was my 28th birthday. Man, I'm getting OLD. But despite being a decrepit old man I did have quite a bit of fun. First on the agenda was opening presents. We decided not to focus much on presents for our birthdays this year, but mine were still pretty awesome. I got a booster of Magic cards because my wife heard how disappointed I was with the cards I'd opened recently. She's so sweet. I got the new Ratchet and Clank game for my PSP which promises to be great fun.

My final present was… Continue

My first novel!

So, I've started work on my very first novel. It's of course a fantasy themed novel. It revolves around a character Cubit, a character that I've RPed in various places over the last 10 years. He's a fiery little womanizing Pixie whose world is falling apart around him. He's starting to find out that everything he knows is wrong and now it's up to him to find out what's really the truth. I'm 1500 words in and I can still hardly believe that I'm finally going to write a novel. It's a wonderful fee… Continue

Thanks Robert. I'm enjoying being here. I think it's been almost 20 years since I read the first Dragonlance Chronicles, and it's amazing how many characters are still vivid in my mind.

You can definitely finish that novel! I think the key to writing a first novel is to give yourself permission to write badly. Don't even stop and search for that perfect word or turn of phrase, just keep typing. Don't even feel you must reread it right away. Let it sit a couple weeks and work on something else. Then you can come back and drum up the hope that one day you will finish editing and rewriting your novel.

The real magic is in the editing :)

If you need any inspiration, just give a shout. I'll be happy to give it a go.

Yeah. That's another reason I've been hesitating over picking up the fourth book. I'm pretty attached to her character and moving on to someone else with her still being a part of the social circle might be hard to get into. I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it. You'll have to let me know if I should pick it up.

Yes. A friend of mine recommended her Kushiel's series to me since I reminded him of the main character. I <3 her work though I only have the first three so far.

I know! We really do need to actually meet one of these days. I'm game for fantasy geekiness though I am behind on my reading as I ran out of space on my bookcase...

Yeah, thanks for that. :) I'm still figuring it all out. I wanted to get some good book suggestions. I'm on an urban fantasy kick right now.

TNG is a fantastic series. I'll be starting an episode-by-episode review of DS9 pretty soon, though I didn't see a single episode of it during its original run -- except for the pilot, which I didn't think much of. Heard that it got better, though, so here's hoping! ;-)

Hail Robert,
I didn't discover fantasy until my early twenties and Tolkien was my first. When I met my husband and went to his parents house, I remember I walked up these long stairs and at the top was a floor to ceiling bookcase crammed with fantasy paperbacks. I thought I have to marry this man. I married him, read all his books and am always looking for more, books that is.
